From Salome Mergia

The ultimate bachelor pad rehab in a downtown Chicago loft when long distance couple Merih and Salome moved in together. He had always wanted to renovate his loft but was overwhelmed by all the decisions and she was always giving unsolicited design expertise to anyone who would listen…it was definitely a match! Salome’s first day after moving to Chicago was an appointment with their contractor at studio41. The renovation took three weeks and the redecorating took another six months. It was the ultimate test of their relationship as they learned the true meaning of compromise and patience.

Their goal was to merge styles and art with the challenge of giving the industrial space the warmth of a lived-in home. Since the exposed brick walls, electrical wiring, and the concrete ceiling/columns provided plenty of architectural interest they painted all the walls white to make the entire loft space as close to a blank canvas as possible. Complimentary earth tones were picked for the cabinets, larger furniture pieces, wallpaper, and art framing. They juxtaposed the industrial loft with more traditional pieces like fluted light sconces and wood mid-century furniture pieces.

The last thing that completed the project with this fusion of styles was their biggest DIY project. After all the renovation and re-furnishing was complete their budget was finished but they felt that the place was not. They wanted to replace all the doors but they settled on giving them all a facelift. Salome added simple wood trim and painted all the doors black with new brass hardware giving the entryway a very dramatic bold feel. This project was a true merging of styles as these two people came together to make their first home as a couple.
